Local History

The first chapter at Northern Illinois Univeristy was formally Delta Phi Beta. The Illinois Gamma Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at NIU was founded on January 24, 1964. A strong house for over 23 years fell and lost their charter in 1988, due to grades and lack of funds. They were brought back as a Pheniox Colony on August 30, 1994 by 8 members.

On January 24, 1998 the chapter was reinstaled at The Levere Memorial Temple at Northwestern University. The 53 founding members, were instaled by the National Supreme Council. The First Chapter to be instaled by the council in over 50 years!
The chapter curently resides at 919 Greenbrier, Delkalb Illinois. The condemned house was inhabited in the Fall on 1997. It was taken over from the Sigma Nu's who destroyed the house, spray painting every wall, flooding the basement, breaking all the windows, and poaring concrete down sinks and toilets. Since then hard work, sweat, and members little money brought the house up to par. Some major advancements the house accomplished was a working kitchen, new Tile in the basement, new carpet for the rest of the house, as well as a big screen tv, and fooseball table. In The Fall of 2001 we are as strong as ever.. Projects are always coming up at the house repainting the front wall, Lions(Leo and Rufus), and putting on new letters on the Front Wall. With 42 members coming back and a dozen or so graduated from last year, both Alumni and Actives are growing in numbers. We hope to work hard on Philantropy and Studies. Come by for a visit any time.
